Thrift Store Find

About two years ago I found a real life house size cabinet at at thrift store for about $25.  Can't resist telling you about a good bargain!  It was scratched up and generally beat up, but it was solid wood and I knew with a little elbow grease it would be fabulous!  Of course it sat in my garage for months until I finally got up the energy to start refinishing it.

Last weekend I just had the feeling that I had to get this project done.  My nephew had started stripping it a while back (but got bored with it and didn't get very far), and it was on my back patio and I didn't want it to get ruined by the weather.  Plus I knew it was going to rain so I figured I had better get it sealed.  Yes, friends, it really does rain in Southern California now and then!  ;-)

Unfortunately I don't have any before pictures.  I really thought I took a picture of it when I brought it home, but I can't find it.  It had old fashioned hardware, golden oak stain, and lots of scratches and dings.

Here it is all stripped and ready for stain.  I decided on red oak.  You know I have a bit of a fancy for things with a red tint to them!  The top part has two shelves with cabinet doors and the bottom has three drawers.  When I saw it in the thrift store I imagined all my craft books in the top cabinet and my yarn and fabric stash in the drawers.

I finished sealing it wit polycrylic on Sunday and I put it all back together.  I think it turned out really pretty!  With my love of instant gratification, it's shocking I had the patience to finish this.

The glass had to be replaced because it broke during the refinishing project.  It had ugly etching on it anyway, and I am much happier with the clear glass.  I replaced all of the old, brass hardware with silver handles and knobs with beaded edges.

Now I just have to enlist the help of my hubby to get it up to my loft so I can use it.  This turned out so well that now I'm going to look for a thrift store desk to refinish.  You just can't find hardwood pieces at such good prices other than a thrift store.  With just a little work and patience you can create something beautiful.
